GeForce GTX 570 vs Radeon RX 5500

Intro

The GeForce GTX 570 comes with a GPU core speed of 732 MHz, and the 1280 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 950 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is comprised of 480 SPUs, 60 TAUs, and 40 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 5500, which features a GPU core clock speed of 1670 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR6 RAM running at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 1408 Stream Processors, 88 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 5500 150 Watts
GeForce GTX 570 219 Watts
Difference: 69 Watts (46%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5500 should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 570 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 229376 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
Difference: 77376 (51%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 should be quite a bit (approximately 235%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 570. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 146960 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 103040 (235%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 53440 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24160 (83%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
