Radeon R7 M265 vs Radeon RX 5500

Intro

The Radeon R7 M265 has core clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5500, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1670 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this model. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5500, in theory, should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R7 M265 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 229376 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 197376 (617%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 is quite a bit (approximately 745%) better at AF than the Radeon R7 M265. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 146960 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 129560 (745%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 is superior to the Radeon R7 M265, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 53440 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 47640 (821%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
