GeForce 8800 GT 512MB vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB has a clock frequency of 600 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and uses a 65 nm design. It is made up of 112 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 memory works at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this model. It features 2304 SPUs along with 144 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 55 Watts (52%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 5600 XT should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 286464 (497%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT is a lot (more or less 489%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 164400 (489%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 78400 (817%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
