GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 features a GPU core speed of 540 MHz, and the 1024 MB of DDR2 memory runs at 400 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which features a GPU core clock speed of 1375 MHz, and 6144 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 1500 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 2304 Stream Processors, 144 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 47 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 113 Watts (240%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 5600 XT should be a lot faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 331264 (2588%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT should be a lot (about 2192%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 189360 (2192%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 83680 (1937%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
