GeForce 8600 GTS vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GTS uses a 80 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 675 MHz. The GDDR3 memory runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1375 MHz, and 6144 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 1500 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 144 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GTS 75 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 85 Watts (113%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5600 XT should perform much faster than the GeForce 8600 GTS in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 312064 (975%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT should be a lot (approximately 1733%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GTS. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 10800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 187200 (1733%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 5400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 82600 (1530%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
