GeForce 8800 GS vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS has a GPU core clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 384 MB of GDDR3 memory is set to run at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 Stream Processors, 48 Texture Address Units, and 12 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which features GPU core speed of 1375 MHz, and 6144 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 1500 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 2304 Stream Processors, 144 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GS 105 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 55 Watts (52%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5600 XT should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GS in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 305664 (796%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT will be quite a bit (more or less 650%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8800 GS. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 171600 (650%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is superior to the GeForce 8800 GS, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 81400 (1233%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
