Radeon R5 M230 vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The Radeon R5 M230 makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 780 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which has a clock frequency of 1375 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 1500 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 144 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 5600 XT should in theory be quite a bit superior to the Radeon R5 M230 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 328064 (2050%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT should be a lot (about 1169%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M230. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 182400 (1169%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT will be much (about 2721%) better at FSAA than the Radeon R5 M230, and should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 84880 (2721%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
