GeForce GTX 850M vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 850M comes with core speeds of 876 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this particular card. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 850M 40 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 120 Watts (300%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5600 XT should in theory be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GTX 850M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 850M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 312064 (975%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT is quite a bit (approximately 465%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 850M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 850M 35040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 162960 (465%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 850M 14016 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 73984 (528%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
