GeForce GTX 870M vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 870M features a GPU clock speed of 941 MHz, and the 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1344 Stream Processors, 112 Texture Address Units, and 24 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which features a GPU core clock speed of 1375 MHz, and 6144 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 1500 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 2304 Stream Processors, 144 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 870M 110 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (45%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 5600 XT should perform a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 870M overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 870M 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 248064 (258%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT should be quite a bit (approximately 88%) better at AF than the GeForce GTX 870M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 870M 105392 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 92608 (88%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 870M 22584 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 65416 (290%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
