Radeon RX 550 vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 550 uses a 14 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1750 MHz on this card. It features 512 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which has a core clock frequency of 1375 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1500 MHz. It also makes use of a 192-bit bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 144 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 110 Watts (220%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 5600 XT should be a lot faster than the Radeon RX 550 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Difference: 229376 (200%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT is much (about 463%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 162800 (463%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT is a lot (approximately 400%) better at AA than the Radeon RX 550, and should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 70400 (400%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
