Radeon HD 3470 512MB vs Radeon RX 5600

Intro

The Radeon HD 3470 512MB has core clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 950 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 40(8x5) SPUs as well as 4 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5600, which features core speeds of 1375 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 6144 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5600 should be 870% faster than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 294912 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 264512 (870%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 will be a lot (approximately 5400%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 176000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 172800 (5400%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 88000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 84800 (2650%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
