Radeon R9 Fury X vs Radeon RX 5600

Intro

The Radeon R9 Fury X comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1050 MHz, and the 4096 MB of HBM memory runs at 500 MHz through a 4096-bit bus. It also features 4096 SPUs, 256 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5600, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM runs at a speed of 1500 MHz on this card. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 5600 150 Watts
Radeon R9 Fury X 275 Watts
Difference: 125 Watts (83%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 Fury X will be 74% quicker than the Radeon RX 5600 in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 512000 MB/sec
Radeon RX 5600 294912 MB/sec
Difference: 217088 (74%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 Fury X is a lot (about 53%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon RX 5600. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 268800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 5600 176000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 92800 (53%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 is superior to the Radeon R9 Fury X, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 88000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 Fury X 67200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20800 (31%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
