GeForce 920M vs Radeon RX 5600

Intro

The GeForce 920M has a GPU clock speed of 954 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 5600, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 memory is set to run at a speed of 1500 MHz on this particular model. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5600 should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 920M overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 294912 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 280512 (1948%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 is quite a bit (approximately 477%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 176000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 145472 (477%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 80368 (1053%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
