GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 features core speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which has GPU core speed of 1605 MHz, and 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2560 Stream Processors, 160 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 47 Watts
Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
Difference: 178 Watts (379%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5700 XT should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 445952 (3484%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT should be a lot (more or less 2872%) better at AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 248160 (2872%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 XT is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 98400 (2278%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
