Radeon HD 3470 256MB vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 3470 256MB features core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 950 MHz on the 256 MB of DDR2 memory. It features 40(8x5) SPUs along with 4 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which features a core clock speed of 1605 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It is comprised of 2560 SPUs, 160 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5700 XT should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 428352 (1409%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT will be much (about 7925%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 253600 (7925%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 99520 (3110%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
