GeForce GTX 570 vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 570 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 732 MHz, and the 1280 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 950 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is comprised of 480 SPUs, 60 TAUs, and 40 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which features a GPU core clock speed of 1605 MHz, and 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2560 SPUs, 160 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 570 219 Watts
Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
Difference: 6 Watts (3%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 5700 XT should perform much faster than the GeForce GTX 570 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
Difference: 306752 (202%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT should be quite a bit (about 485%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 570. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 212880 (485%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 XT is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 73440 (251%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
