Geforce GTX 780 vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The Geforce GTX 780 comes with a clock speed of 863 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1502 MHz. It also features a 384-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 192 Texture Address Units, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1605 MHz, and 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2560 Stream Processors, 160 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Difference: 25 Watts (11%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 5700 XT should be much faster than the Geforce GTX 780 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
Difference: 170368 (59%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is a lot (approximately 55%) more effective at texture filtering than the Geforce GTX 780. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 91104 (55%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 XT is superior to the Geforce GTX 780, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 61296 (148%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
