Geforce GTX 770 vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The Geforce GTX 770 has core speeds of 1046 MHz on the GPU, and 1753 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1536 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which features core clock speeds of 1605 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8096 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
Geforce GTX 770 230 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (2%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5700 XT should in theory be quite a bit superior to the Geforce GTX 770 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
Difference: 234368 (104%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is much (about 92%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Geforce GTX 770. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 122912 (92%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 XT is superior to the Geforce GTX 770, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 69248 (207%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
