GeForce GTX 780 Ti vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 780 Ti comes with clock speeds of 875 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2880 SPUs as well as 240 Texture Address Units and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1605 MHz. The GDDR6 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this specific card. It features 2560 SPUs along with 160 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
GeForce GTX 780 Ti 250 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (11%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 5700 XT should be 37% quicker than the GeForce GTX 780 Ti in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 780 Ti 336000 MB/sec
Difference: 122752 (37%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT should be quite a bit (more or less 22%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 780 Ti. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 780 Ti 210000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 46800 (22%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT should be quite a bit (approximately 145%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 780 Ti 42000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 60720 (145%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
