GeForce GTX 960M vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 960M features a GPU core speed of 1096 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1605 MHz. The GDDR6 memory is set to run at a speed of 1750 MHz on this specific card. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 960M 65 Watts
Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
Difference: 160 Watts (246%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5700 XT will be 617% faster than the GeForce GTX 960M in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 960M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 394752 (617%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT will be a lot (approximately 486%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 960M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 960M 43840 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 212960 (486%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT will be much (about 486%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 960M, and should be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 960M 17536 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 85184 (486%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
