GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M features a GPU clock speed of 944 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1605 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this particular card. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
Difference: 165 Watts (275%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 5700 XT should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce GTX 965M overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 394752 (617%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is a lot (approximately 325%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 965M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 196384 (325%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 72512 (240%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
