Radeon HD 7870 XT vs Radeon RX 5700

Intro

The Radeon HD 7870 XT has a clock speed of 925 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1500 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1536 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 5700, which has core clock speeds of 1465 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 5700 180 Watts
Radeon HD 7870 XT 185 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (3%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5700 should in theory perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7870 XT overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 458752 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7870 XT 192000 MB/sec
Difference: 266752 (139%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 should be a lot (more or less 138%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7870 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 210960 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7870 XT 88800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 122160 (138%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 is superior to the Radeon HD 7870 XT, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 93760 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7870 XT 29600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 64160 (217%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
