Radeon R5 M255 vs Radeon RX 5700

Intro

The Radeon R5 M255 features a GPU core clock speed of 940 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 320 Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5700, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1465 MHz, and 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2304 Stream Processors, 144 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 5700 is 2767% faster than the Radeon R5 M255 in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 458752 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 442752 (2767%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 should be a lot (more or less 1022%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 210960 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 192160 (1022%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 93760 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 86240 (1147%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
