GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB vs Radeon RX 590

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB features clock speeds of 513 MHz on the GPU, and 792 MHz on the 320 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 Texture Address Units and 20 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 590, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1469 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2304 SPUs, 144 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 143 Watts
Radeon RX 590 175 Watts
Difference: 32 Watts (22%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 590, in theory, should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 262144 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 198784 (314%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 590 should be quite a bit (about 759%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 211536 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 186912 (759%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 590 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 47008 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 36748 (358%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
