GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB vs Radeon RX 590

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB uses a 65 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 800 MHz on this particular model. It features 96 SPUs as well as 48 TAUs and 12 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 590, which features clock speeds of 1469 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 84 Watts
Radeon RX 590 175 Watts
Difference: 91 Watts (108%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 590 should be a lot faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 262144 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 223744 (583%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 590 is a lot (approximately 701%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 211536 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 185136 (701%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 590 is superior to the GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 47008 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 40408 (612%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
