GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 vs GeForce RTX 2080

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 has a GPU core clock speed of 540 MHz, and the 256 MB of DDR2 RAM runs at 400 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 32 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce RTX 2080, which comes with clock speeds of 1515 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 2944 SPUs as well as 184 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 47 Watts
GeForce RTX 2080 215 Watts
Difference: 168 Watts (357%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce RTX 2080 is 3484% faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 458752 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 445952 (3484%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 will be much (approximately 3126%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 278760 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 270120 (3126%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2080 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 96960 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 92640 (2144%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
