GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB has clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 96 SPUs as well as 48 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 550, which makes use of a 14 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this particular card. It features 512 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 90 Watts
Difference: 40 Watts (80%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 550 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 57088 (99%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 550 should be a small bit (more or less 13%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 31200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4000 (13%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 550 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7200 (69%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
