Radeon R5 M255 vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The Radeon R5 M255 comes with core speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 550, which makes use of a 14 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this card. It features 512 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 550 should in theory be much faster than the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 98688 (617%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 550 will be a lot (more or less 87%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16400 (87%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 550 will be a lot (approximately 134%) better at AA than the Radeon R5 M255, and should be able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10080 (134%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
