GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB vs Radeon RX 570

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB has a clock speed of 513 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 792 MHz. It also features a 320-bit memory bus, and uses a 90 nm design. It is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 20 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 570, which uses a 14 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1168 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1750 MHz on this model. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Radeon RX 570 229376 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 166016 (262%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 570 is much (more or less 507%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 570 149504 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 124880 (507%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 570 is much (more or less 264%) more effective at AA than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 570 37376 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 27116 (264%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
