GeForce 825M vs Radeon RX 470

Intro

The GeForce 825M features core speeds of 850 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 470, which has a core clock speed of 926 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1650 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 14 nm design. It features 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 825M 33 Watts
Radeon RX 470 120 Watts
Difference: 87 Watts (264%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 470 should theoretically perform much faster than the GeForce 825M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 211200 MB/sec
GeForce 825M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 196800 (1367%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 is much (about 772%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 825M. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 825M 13600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 104928 (772%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 825M 6800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22832 (336%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
