Radeon R9 M370X vs Radeon R9 M390X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M370X features a GPU core clock speed of 800 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M390X, which comes with GPU core speed of 723 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M390X should be a lot faster than the Radeon R9 M370X overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 160000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 88000 (122%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M390X will be quite a bit (more or less 189%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 92544 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 60544 (189%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M390X should be quite a bit (more or less 81%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon R9 M370X, and also capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 23136 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10336 (81%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
