Radeon R9 Fury X vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon R9 Fury X has clock speeds of 1050 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 4096 MB of HBM memory. It features 4096 SPUs along with 256 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M380, which features GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 Fury X will be 433% quicker than the Radeon R9 M380 overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 512000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 416000 (433%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 Fury X is a lot (about 572%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M380. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 268800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 228800 (572%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 Fury X is superior to the Radeon R9 M380, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 67200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 51200 (320%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
