GeForce 940M vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The GeForce 940M has a clock speed of 1072 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also features a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M380, which features clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M380, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the GeForce 940M in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 80000 (500%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is a lot (approximately 55%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14272 (55%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M380 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7424 (87%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
