Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R9 M375X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 has a core clock speed of 668 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 828 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is made up of 320(64x5) SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M375X, which features core clock speeds of 1015 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M375X should theoretically be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 3690/3830 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 45504 (172%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M375X is quite a bit (about 280%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 40600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 29912 (280%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M375X will be a lot (more or less 52%) more effective at AA than the Radeon HD 3690/3830, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 16240 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5552 (52%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
