Radeon HD 6950 vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon HD 6950 has core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M370X, which comes with GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6950 should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M370X in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 160000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 88000 (122%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 will be much (about 120%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 38400 (120%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12800 (100%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
