Geforce GTX 680 vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The Geforce GTX 680 features a GPU core clock speed of 1006 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1502 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1536 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 M360, which features GPU core speed of 1125 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Geforce GTX 680 should in theory be a lot better than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 192256 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 176256 (1102%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 680 should be much (approximately 377%) better at AF than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 128768 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 101768 (377%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 680 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 32192 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 23192 (258%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
