Radeon R7 M360 vs Radeon R9 380 4G

Intro

The Radeon R7 M360 has core clock speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 380 4G, which has a core clock frequency of 970 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1425 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1792 SPUs, 112 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 380 4G should be 1040% faster than the Radeon R7 M360 in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 4G 182400 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 166400 (1040%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 380 4G is much (more or less 302%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 4G 108640 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 81640 (302%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 380 4G is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 4G 31040 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22040 (245%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
