GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 783 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 902 MHz on this specific card. It features 192 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M330, which features core clock speeds of 1030 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTS 450 should in theory be a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M330 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 43328 (301%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 will be quite a bit (approximately 22%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4456 (22%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4288 (52%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
