GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 105 Watts
GeForce GTX 870M 110 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (5%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 870M should theoretically be much better than the GeForce 9800 GT 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 870M 96000 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (67%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 870M should be quite a bit (approximately 214%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 9800 GT 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 870M 105392 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 71792 (214%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 870M is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 870M 22584 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12984 (135%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
