GeForce GTX 860M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M has a GPU clock speed of 797 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1152 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R5 M255, which features core clock speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 860M will be 300% faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M should be much (more or less 307%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 57712 (307%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M will be quite a bit (more or less 70%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and also capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5232 (70%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
