Radeon HD 4850 2GB vs Radeon R7 M260

Intro

The Radeon HD 4850 2GB has core speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 993 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR4 memory. It features 800(160x5) SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M260, which has core clock speeds of 715 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 4850 2GB should perform much faster than the Radeon R7 M260 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 2GB 63552 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 47552 (297%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4850 2GB should be much (more or less 46%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M260. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 2GB 25000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7840 (46%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4850 2GB is superior to the Radeon R7 M260, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 2GB 10000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4280 (75%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
