GeForce 8800 GT 512MB vs GeForce GTX 980 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB has core speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 112 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, which has clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 6144 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2816 SPUs along with 176 TAUs and 96 ROPs.

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
GeForce GTX 980 Ti 250 Watts
Difference: 145 Watts (138%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 Ti 336000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 278400 (483%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti will be a lot (more or less 424%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 Ti 176000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 142400 (424%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 Ti 96000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 86400 (900%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
