GeForce GTX Titan Black vs Radeon HD 3470 256MB

Intro

The GeForce GTX Titan Black comes with a clock speed of 889 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 384-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 2880 SPUs, 240 TAUs, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 3470 256MB, which has core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 950 MHz on the 256 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 40(8x5) SPUs as well as 4 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX Titan Black should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan Black 336000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 305600 (1005%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX Titan Black is quite a bit (about 6568%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan Black 213360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 210160 (6568%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX Titan Black is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan Black 42672 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 39472 (1234%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
