GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB vs Geforce GTX 780

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB comes with a clock speed of 550 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 800 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 65 nm design. It is made up of 96 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 12 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Geforce GTX 780, which has a clock frequency of 863 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1502 MHz. It also features a 384-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 2304 SPUs, 192 TAUs, and 48 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 84 Watts
Geforce GTX 780 250 Watts
Difference: 166 Watts (198%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Geforce GTX 780 should perform much faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 249984 (651%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 780 should be quite a bit (approximately 528%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 139296 (528%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 780 is superior to the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB, by far. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 34824 (528%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
