Radeon HD 5450 vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The Radeon HD 5450 features core clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 80(16x5) SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 5670, which features a core clock frequency of 775 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5450 19 Watts
Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (221%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 5670 should in theory perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 5450 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5670 will be much (about 198%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10300 (198%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5670 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3600 (138%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
