Radeon HD 5450 vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The Radeon HD 5450 features a GPU core clock speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 80(16x5) SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5670, which has a core clock frequency of 775 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5450 19 Watts
Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (221%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 5670 will be 400% quicker than the Radeon HD 5450 in general, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5670 should be much (more or less 198%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10300 (198%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5670 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3600 (138%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
