GeForce GTX 480 vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The GeForce GTX 480 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 700 MHz, and the 1536 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 924 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 480 Stream Processors, 60 Texture Address Units, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6790, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 840 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1050 MHz on this card. It features 800 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 480 should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6790 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 480 177408 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
Difference: 43008 (32%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 480 is much (about 25%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6790. (explain)

GeForce GTX 480 42000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8400 (25%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 480 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 480 33600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20160 (150%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
