Radeon HD 5450 vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The Radeon HD 5450 makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 650 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a frequency of 800 MHz on this card. It features 80(16x5) SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 5670, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 775 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (221%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 5670 should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5450 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5670 will be much (more or less 198%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10300 (198%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5670 will be a lot (approximately 138%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon HD 5450, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3600 (138%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
