GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs Radeon HD 5830

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti comes with core speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1026 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 192 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5830, which features GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1120(224x5) SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
Radeon HD 5830 175 Watts
Difference: 59 Watts (51%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 5830 is 30% quicker than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 5830 128000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Difference: 29504 (30%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5830 is a lot (approximately 56%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. (explain)

Radeon HD 5830 44800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16000 (56%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is superior to the Radeon HD 5830, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5830 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8800 (69%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
