GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB vs GeForce GTX 570

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB features a GPU core speed of 513 MHz, and the 320 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 792 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 20 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 570, which features a clock frequency of 732 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 950 MHz. It also makes use of a 320-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 480 SPUs, 60 TAUs, and 40 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 143 Watts
GeForce GTX 570 219 Watts
Difference: 76 Watts (53%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 570 should be much faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 88640 (140%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 570 is a lot (more or less 78%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19296 (78%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 570 is superior to the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19020 (185%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
