GeForce GTX 465 vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 has a clock frequency of 607 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 802 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 352 SPUs, 44 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which has clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 465 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Difference: 57408 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB will be much (more or less 164%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 43692 (164%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is superior to the GeForce GTX 465, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6176 (32%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
